Below is a list of other campaigns and groups, many in Bloomsbury, which the UCL Living Wage Campaign supports.
3Cosas Campaign
At
Senate House, outsourced workers at the
University of London won the LLW in 2011 and since then have been
campaigning for sick pay, holiday allowance and pensions equal to
university employees. Find out more about the 3Cosas campaign on
their website. In 2013, they have organized a more and bigger actions with ULU to build their campaign: like their
Facebook page and follow them
on Twitter to keep in touch.
SOAS Justice for Cleaners Campaign
Similarly,
SOAS cleaners are fighting for equal
terms and conditions with university employees, and to be brought back
in-house, as Queen Mary cleaners were. Find out more and how to get
involved on their
Facebook page.
Birkbeck Justice for Cleaners Campaign
In 2009,
Birkbeck was forced by a cleaners’ campaign
to pay the Living Wage. However, recently the college tried to claw
some of this money back. It changed its agreement in December 2012 with the
contractor, Ocean, to reduce its cleaning requirements. Under the new
contract, the cleaners would have 15 minutes cut from their hours each
day: this equals a 12.5% pay cut! Birkbeck have now caved in to the
cleaners demands and will pay transitional funding. Read the letter
Birkbeck’s cleaners sent to their management
here.
Bloomsbury Fightback!
Bloomsbury Fightback! brings together students, workers, and other
trouble-makers from across Bloomsbury to fight the worst exploitation
inflicted by management under the auspices of ‘austerity’, to defend the
pockets of critical thought and common learning we see under attack,
and generally to disrupt the processes of our immiseration. BF! has
strong connections with trade unionists and students at
UCL, Senate House, Birkbeck and SOAS. Find out more on
their website and
on Facebook.
